Make the most of the UITP Summit by joining UITP’s Bus & Rail Study Tours on 13-15 & 19-21 JUNE 2025. UITP’s Study Tours gives the opportunity to join a unique learning event composed of technical visits to 4 major bus and rail networks in Germany with a diversity of technologies and operation strategies to discover.

The study tours will provide an in-depth look at diverse bus and rail networks, showcasing advanced technologies and operational strategies. Each day will feature presentations by public transport operators, offering insights into network management and operations. These will be followed by site visits to bus and rail depots, maintenance centres, and, in some cases, operational control centres, stations, and key development projects.

There are two Study Tours:

BUS STUDY TOUR – 13-15 JUNE 2025 -> Before the UITP SUMMIT

  • Friday 13th June in Frankfurt am Main
    • Visit of the KIRA autonomous vehicle project with Level 4 operation in Darmstadt and Offenbach
  • Saturday 14th June in Hannover
    • Visit of Germany’s largest on-demand public transport system with “Sprinti” buses, which enable flexible and needs-based mobility in rural areas
    • Visit to an E-bus depot
  • Sunday 15th June in Hamburg
    • Visit to an E-bus depot

RAIL STUDY TOUR – 19-21 JUNE 2025 -> After the UITP SUMMIT

  • Thursday 19th June in Hamburg
    • Automation and Digitalisation of Metro project + visit of construction site for new U5 automated metro line
  • Friday 20th June in Berlin
    • Maintenance and operation of tramways in Berlin
  • Saturday 21st June in Frankfurt am Main
    • Visit of various ongoing and planned construction measures at Frankfurt Central Station for the new long-distance railway tunnel.
    Why Frankfurt am Main, Hanover, Hamburg and Berlin? 
    • These cities run some of the most extensive heavy rail systems in Europe: metro networks and suburban services as well as sustainable bus systems in Europe
    • The cities and companies have invested in major depot and maintenance facilities, stations and control centres
    • The diversity of technologies and infrastructure to discover
    • The connectivity between each of the three cities by high-speed train
    What will I visit and learn during the study tour?
    • Presentations by the local transport operator on the bus and rail strategies and developments
    • Presentations by the 4 local bus and rail operators on:
      • Their current bus and rail system as well as future developments
      • Operations management
      • Vehicles, technology and infrastructure in their system
      • Maintenance, asset management and Innovation
    • Visit of at major depots, operational control centres and maintenance facilities with explanations by professionals of each company
    • A more detailed programme to follow.
    Who and how many people to expect?

    The group is limited to 20 participants for each tour to ensure a good learning experience. UITP is a global association, and participants come from public transport companies worldwide.

    When will the final programme be available? Can there be changes in the programme?

    The programme will be outlined on this website very soon but please note that UITP reserves the right to make amendments to the programme or any related activity at its discretion. In any case, it would not affect the travel plans of participants.
