This study, based on a 120 questions-survey, aims to identify the current situation when it comes to metro maintenance organisations regarding LEAN management in the context of their maintenance activities.
To develop an overview of the current LEAN activities, four main topics were considered:
• Organisation
• Materials Management
• Maintenance
• Training and Human Resources
Based on the results of the questionnaire, the maturity level of organisations, best practices, niche practices, and geographical differences in the application of LEAN principles have been identified for each of the above categories.
The study shows that basic principles such as quality management and process management are broadly established and build the foundation for most maintenance organisations.
All organisations use some basic LEAN principles (although others are far from being applied). The results of the questionnaire also allow to identify several areas of potential improvement and use cases for LEAN maintenance implementation in metro rolling stock, and best practices on how to improve planning of corrective maintenance to increase the rolling stock availability.
