Global Urban Mobility Indicators 2022

Public transport metrics from 46 cities worldwide

Did you know that in 2022 a public transport fare in Jakarta, Delhi and Bangalore was just 0.10 USD? Or that Beijing had 1,537 bus vehicles per million inhabitants, and that 72% of those vehicles were battery electric?

The 2022 Global Urban Mobility Indicators (GUMI) report bundles public transport metrics from 46 cities worldwide. It analyses 27 key indicators, highlighting trends, challenges, and innovations in urban mobility, providing insights for policymakers, urban planners, and transport professionals.

By benchmarking key indicators like affordability, network length, and sustainability, the report paints a picture of the global urban mobility landscape. For each of the 46 cities included, the report outlines major metrics such as ridership, the number of lines and the number of vehicles in a tailored factsheet. It also looks at the presence of services like vehicle sharing, open loop payments and waterborne services.

An annual public transport benchmark

The GUMI report is based on desk research, with figures collected from public sources. However, when certain data were unavailable or unclear, UITP utilised its network of over 1,900 members to gather additional information.

This has resulted in a list of 46 cities included in this first report. Though not exhaustive, the GUMI report covers the globe. Over the coming years the report will be updated annually. In this process UITP intends to grow the list of cities gradually, making the resource even more valuable.
