UITP won the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) award at the European Association Awards yesterday in Brussels. The prize was awarded to UITP’s policy on gender equality, which has been in place since November 2021.
The policy aims to address the gender imbalance in the public transport sector. Public transport has historically been designed and operated predominantly by men, often neglecting the specific needs of women. Our policy aims to bridge this gap by ensuring gender parity within UITP and encouraging more women to engage with our activities.
Since its launch, UITP has eliminated manels (men-only panels), doubled the number of women speakers at our events, and achieved significant representation of women on our boards.
Our commitment to gender diversity reflects our belief that an inclusive public transport sector is essential for sustainable urban mobility.
The European Association Awards are designed to celebrate projects that inspire the entire association community. These awards spotlight the behind-the-scenes efforts and best practices that can be shared and implemented across various sectors.
We are honoured to be recognised by our peers for our efforts in promoting gender diversity, especially within UITP’s diverse, multi-cultural context. This award highlights the success of our integrated measures across various levels, from our boards to our events, and reinforces our commitment to creating an inclusive public transport sector.
The DEI category acknowledges initiatives that embody the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Projects eligible for this award must demonstrate their impact either internally within the organization or externally with members, stakeholders, or the general public.
