Transforming Road Safety in Africa

In celebration of African Mobility Month 2024, a time dedicated to advocating for people-focused, low-carbon, and resilient mobility solutions that benefit urban communities across the continent, the TRANS-SAFE project has officially launched its toolbox. This marks another milestone in the ongoing effort to improve road safety and foster more sustainable, inclusive transport systems throughout Africa.

The TRANS-SAFE Toolbox is a comprehensive solution designed to tackle a pressing challenge: road safety. It offers a wide array of practical resources, from best practices and training programmes to recommendations, all aimed at equipping local, regional, and national authorities with the tools they need to improve safety on African roads. With a strong emphasis on capacity-building, this toolbox is a hands-on resource tailored to implement practical solutions in real-world urban settings.

Improving road safety in Africa goes beyond merely reducing traffic accidents. It’s about creating cities that are safer, healthier, and more liveable. Safer roads pave the way for more efficient public transport systems, which are essential for sustainable urban mobility, driving economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for millions. The TRANS-SAFE Toolbox addresses all five pillars of the Safe System, providing holistic support for designing safer streets, enhancing legal frameworks, and working with private sector partners to ensure that road safety equipment meets local needs.

What’s Inside the TRANS-SAFE Toolbox?

The toolbox offers a wide-ranging approach to road safety, addressing not just infrastructure but also human behaviour, policy design, and community engagement. It supports African cities in adapting these tools to local conditions, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience.

For instance, by focusing on challenges such as the speed differences between motorised and non-motorised traffic or improving safety at highway crossings, the toolbox empowers cities to make targeted changes that have a lasting impact on urban mobility and road safety. Moreover, the focus on understanding human behaviour is crucial in designing policies and interventions that align with the realities of how people move and interact within urban spaces. This aspect of the toolbox ensures that safety interventions are not only infrastructurally sound but also socially effective.
