Road traffic injuries are a major public health crisis across many African nations, and schoolchildren are among the most vulnerable. How can we ensure their journeys to school are safe?

On 30 October 2024 at 13:00 CET, the TRANS-SAFE project, in collaboration with EIT Urban Mobility, will host a peer-learning webinar titled ‘Journey to School: Creating Safer Roads for Our Children.’ The session will focus on real-life case studies from two pilot cities – Cape Town, South Africa, and Kigali, Rwanda – that are working on practical solutions to protect children during their daily commutes.

The webinar will feature:

  • The Safe School Zone for Rwanda Rap in Kigali, presented by Francois Zirikana from the University of Rwanda.
  • The development of the Route2School education platform in Kigali, presented by An Neve from the Hasselt University.
  • Safe Routes to School for children in Cape Town, presented by Owen Mwaura from the University of Cape Town.

These case studies will showcase how cities are successfully implementing practical measures to safeguard schoolchildren during their daily journeys. The webinar provides an opportunity to explore road safety strategies, exchange ideas, and learn from experts and peers dedicated to enhancing the safety of routes to school. It will also highlight the real impact these initiatives are having in African cities.

Register here by 28 October 2024 to secure your spot.

We all have a part to play – children shouldn’t have to worry about their safety on the way to school. Their focus should be on learning, not navigating dangerous roads. Let’s work together to make every school journey safer.
