“Public transport is all about linking up people…across networks, right across the world.”
The perfect introduction to a brand-new series designed to show the energy and dedication within public transport to provide us all with better lives.
Urban mobility is changing. And with a new reality defining the way people move around our cities, a central question has emerged: What do we want the future of public transport to look like?
With that question in mind, UITP is delighted to present the launch of “The Way We Move: Transporting Stories”, a brand-new, member-led series, produced for us by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions.
Our sector is full of renewed ambition – determined to promote a more inclusive, greener and connected future for urban mobility all over the world.
So how do you show the world what is happening across the globe in public transport? How do we best tell the stories of the people who use public transport every day…The people who move us every day?
Communication matters, and telling stories can make a difference.
There’s no better way to present what public transport can do, should do, and will do, than in a series of beautifully crafted, visually arresting mini-documentaries, shown globally on a brand-new BBC.com microsite.
Public transport is a sector full of many different stories to tell, each of them highlighting the innovation that make it an essential service for billions of people around the world. This new series will help illuminate the work being done to make our cities more liveable and accessible. It will also shine a much welcomed spotlight on the people who are at the very heart of public transport – those who work tirelessly within it, and those who rely on it every single day. I’m very proud to see our members showcase their work with such passion and pride.”
In 2019, UITP presented a series determined to uncover the major transformations reshaping public transport across the globe.
Taking viewers to 17 cities across four continents, Redefining Public Transport, produced by BBC StoryWorks, saw more than two million people viewing the documentary films online, revealing the potential of public transport to capture the curiosity of a global audience.
With every interesting development, with every changing opportunity, there is the chance to tell a new story about a sector that is crucial to every day city living. Public transport is an essential service, and it’s essential that we tell the world more about it.
Now, with 21 UITP members, setting a new record of engagement from our previous series, we are taking viewers on a tour of modes, cities, networks, cultures and people, to showcase the incredible stories on innovation, diversity and inclusion, accessibility, sustainability and the greener future.

The journeys we take everyday matter. The experience contributes to our mood and productivity, and the modes of transport we use shape and contour our cities. It’s been a privilege to work with UITP and such brilliant partners to explore the Way We Move, and champion the innovation in urban mobility.
This new series will reach a whole new audience, as it is housed on a dedicated BBC.com microsite, as well as a UITP.org web page, across social media, and promoted at international UITP events, leading up to the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Barcelona (4-7 June 2023).
Centred on the people who make public transport what it is, it showcases the meaningful roles it plays in daily life as a champion of safety, access, and inclusion for passengers regardless of age, gender, disability, or race.
The importance of this new series cannot be underestimated. The global reach, the important topics and the vital stories being told will bring the world of public transport to new audiences, and a whole new level.
