Following the successful MENA Transport Congress and Exhibition in Dubai, the UITP MENA Conference took place in the beautiful city of Salalah in Oman on July 16th, under the patronage of HE Sayid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, the Governor of Dhofar.
The event highlighted Oman’s exploration of smart technologies and clean energy solutions in urban mobility. This includes the introduction of e-buses, green hydrogen buses, and intelligent transportation systems to optimise route planning and enhance passenger experience. The conference attracted over 250 participants from 16 countries, providing a platform to discuss the latest policies and best practices in public transportation.
During the opening ceremony, Mwasalat, Oman’s national operator, introduced Oman’s first electric bus into its public transport fleet, underscoring the country’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. This initiative supports Oman’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and sets a precedent for future public transport in the region.
It is crucial to recognise our responsibility towards the environment and understand that public transport significantly reduces the carbon footprint. We must engage in discussions and exchanges on public transportation and sustainable mobility to foster a greener future.
In addition to the launch of Oman’s first electric bus, the UITP MENA Centre for Transport Excellence presented its latest report on walkability in the MENA region. This research underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to promote inclusive, efficient, and environmentally friendly mobility. The study provides an actionable roadmap to enhance walkability in the region, addressing infrastructure, safety, enforcement, collaboration, and partnerships.
The UITP MENA Conference featured expert-led sessions and panel discussions on the region’s unique transportation challenges and opportunities. Cutting-edge technologies, sustainable mobility solutions, and innovative strategies were showcased to improve public transport systems in MENA. Participants had the opportunity to network with industry leaders, policymakers, and professionals, paving the way for future collaborations and advancements in public transportation.
