Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
By working towards a world where difference is valued and celebrated, we can all play a part to #InspireInclusion.
In recent years, UITP has placed a strong focus on the role of women in our industry as both passengers and employees.
From #EachForEqual and #ChooseToChallenge, to#BreakTheBias and #EmbraceEquity – the involvement of our staff and global membership has helped to make this output shine.
Now, for International Women’s Day 2024 (Fri 8 March), we’re working towards making public transport a more equal sector with the official theme #InspireInclusion.
Beginning with the launch of our #PT4ME campaign, to our Women in Leadership focus and the UITP Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, we’ve been advocating alongside our members for a more inclusive sector.
Since 2019, we have also coordinated our communication activities around the theme of the annual International Women’s Day.
As well as acknowledging the advancements of women within our sector, UITP made history itself last year when Renée Amilcar became the association’s first female President in our 138-year history.
Becoming President of UITP was not only a pinnacle moment in my professional career, but also a personal achievement to become the first woman to do so. I am passionate about advocating for the role of women within our sector, and elevating opportunities for the next generation. Aside from being the right thing to do in creating a more gender-balanced world, we know that tackling issues with gender and mobility is a crucial part of the transition to inclusive, green societies. Public transport should reflect our society, in its diversity, gender equity and balance. I’m proud to do my part to #InspireInclusion for International Women’s Day.”
At UITP, we’re always working to advance gender equality within the sector. How can we develop mobility that offers people of all genders equal opportunities to access education, work, social and cultural activities? It’s time to look at some statistics!
UITP ensures that all our event panels feature a balance of women and men.
UITP has now doubled the amount of women panellists at our own events.
If men would travel as women already do today, emissions would be reduced by 18%.
If women’s views were taken into consideration when designing and operating transportation systems, the use of energy and emissions from passenger transport would decrease by 29%.
UITP’s own staff is made of 52% women.
UITP’s Management Board is now 44% women
Our colleagues, members and partners unite to #InspireInclusion
International Women’s Day belongs to everyone, everywhere. And that includes within public transport.
We know that problems remain in public transport when it comes to a gender balance – for all the women who use the service as passengers, there remains a lack of women working within it.
UITP’s own gender equality policy was put in place with the guidance of several leading figures from our Executive and Policy Boards, helping us to develop our internal direction.
The policy sets out UITP’s principles, such as no male-only panels for our events, as well as our targets to double the amount of women speakers at events, and increase the number of women on boards.
There’s always more work to do, and we must also practice what we preach. As a global voice for public transport, we can make sure our exciting and rapidly-developing sector is one that is inclusive for all.
From the focus on diversity and gender equity for our President Renée Amilcar, to the work from our member-led Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, to our employee-led Task Force on diversity, UITP is committed to building lasting change.
UITP is proud to embrace the #IWD2024 theme. Worldwide everyone, everywhere can step forward to #InspireInclusion
