Imagine a gender equal world. One that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
Within the global community of public transport, together we can create a sector that best reflects the cities it serves. Collectively for International Women’s Day, it’s time to Accelerate Action.
In recent years, UITP has placed a strong focus on the role of women in our industry as both passengers and employees.
From #EachForEqual, #ChooseToChallenge, #BreakTheBias, #EmbraceEquity and #InspireInclusion – the involvement of our staff and global membership has helped to make this output among the most engaged content each year.
Now, we’re working towards advancing the action being taken within public transport to bring a more equal sector to the forefront.
With our Women in Leadership focus and the UITP Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, we’ve been advocating alongside our members for a more inclusive sector.
For public transport to best reflect the cities it serves, a more gender-balanced sector is essential to creating lasting change. Our strength lies in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion, and together we can #AccelerateAction in 2025 and beyond. Be bold, be brave, and be courageous!
How can we develop mobility that offers everyone equal opportunities to access education, work, social and cultural activities? It’s time to look at some statistics!
UITP ensures that all our event panels feature a balance of women and men
UITP has now doubled the amount of women panellists at our own events
UITP’s Management Board is now 44% women
If men would travel as women already do today, emissions would be reduced by 18%
If women’s views were taken into consideration when designing and operating transportation systems, the use of energy and emissions from passenger transport would decrease by 29%
UITP’s own staff is more than 50% women
Our colleagues, members and partners unite to #AccelerateAction
International Women’s Day belongs to everyone, everywhere. And that includes within public transport.
UITP’s own gender equality policy was put in place with the guidance of several leading figures from our Executive and Policy Boards, helping us to develop our internal direction.
The policy sets out UITP’s principles, such as no male-only panels for our events, as well as our targets to double the amount of women speakers at events, and increase the number of women on boards.
We are also advancing these issues beyond our own association, with our Secretary General Mohamed Mezghani attending the annual lunch for IWD with Femmes en Mouvement.
Our Sec Gen will network with speakers to discuss how to instill a cultural change within the workplace and strengthen the role of women within governing bodies, in organisations, and in general.
There’s always more work to do, and we must also practice what we preach. As a global voice for public transport, we can make sure our rapidly-developing sector is one that is inclusive for all.
UITP is committed to building lasting change and we’re proud to embrace the #IWD2025 theme. Worldwide everyone, everywhere can step up to #AccelerateAction.
