Public transport networks around the world must serve everyone. With half of our population being women, it’s important to consider whether their specific needs are being met within the sector. Their access and active participation to education, jobs and health facilities depends on availability and quality of public transport. We need to attract more women to jobs across the sector to be more customer oriented and address their needs. Despite our growing initiatives to include more women in our sector, we still have much work to do to improve our gender balance.
Public transport had traditionally been viewed as a male-dominated sector. However, in recent years, we have witnessed a transformative shift. Women are breaking barriers and reshaping the landscape of public transport. This change is not just a reflection of societal progress but also a testament to the resilience, determination, and competence of women in the MENA region.
In many MENA countries, we have seen initiatives aimed at increasing female participation in the workforce. Governments and private enterprises have implemented policies to ensure that women have equal opportunities in various sectors, including public transport. These initiatives have not only provided women with new career paths but have also contributed to the overall economic growth and development of our region. Today, women are driving buses and taxis, operating trains, and leading at strategic positions.
Joining hands with our UITP members we have launched a project on identifying the challenges women are facing in the sector and what can be the new opportunities considering the shift in the sector towards sustainability, new financial models, technological advancements and customer centricity. These changes open new doors for women to enter the sector. The launch event for the project was organised in Dubai on the 18th July with overwhelming participation of UITP members attending from various countries including UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Oman. The keynote speaker Mona Al Osaimi acting CEO Corporate and Strategic Governance Sector Roads and Transport Authority Dubai, underscored the significance of fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment where everyone can thrive. In a rapidly evolving industry, Muna stressed the need for ongoing education and professional development to stay ahead and adapt to changes. Muna Al Osaimi’s insights were not just enlightening but also a powerful reminder of the collective effort needed to support and advance women in public transport.
Our panelists shared their journey and how positive mentorship, leadership support, confidence and continuous learning has enabled them to progress in their careers.
I hope one day we won’t need this kind of event anymore. It would mean that women will not face issues at work related to the fact that they are women, and men will have accepted that women are not a threat but an ally. Don’t forget, when it’s good for women, it’s good for all!
The growth of women in the public transport profession in the MENA region is a story of breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and building a brighter future for all. Let us celebrate there achievements and continue to work together to support and empower women in every aspect of our society.
