Paratransit refers to informal, often unregulated public transport services, which play a crucial role in many parts of the developing world. Despite its importance, paratransit presents challenges for city planners and transport authorities. Its unregulated nature can make it difficult to manage and integrate into formal transport systems.
Because of the unique conditions in each region and the lack of adequate infrastructure, addressing paratransit requires innovative solutions. Technology offers promising opportunities to improve the quality, safety, and environmental impact of these services.
In 2024, UITP’s Paratransit Group prepared several publications:
– Policy Brief:Description, Roles, and Functions of Paratransit, providing a clearer picture of the paratransit sector by presenting the characteristics, roles, and functions in the mobility system;
– Knowledge Brief: A Business Model Toolkit for the Paratransit Sector, offering a toolkit to help analyse the business-oriented nature of the industry;
– Policy Brief: The Value of Data for the Paratransit Sector, explaining the significant role that data could play in enhancing the paratransit sector’s capabilities, as well as showing the opportunities technology provides.
Thr Paratransit Working Group continues its work and would like to share its findings at the training programme.
Please contact Mahnoor FAROOQUI at UITP MENA office if you want to know more about the training, or if you want to be a part of this 3-day programme which is free for UITP members and get a UITP certificate for participation.
