The Major Metropolises Group members (MMG) came together in Geneva, on the occasion of the 60th UITP World Congress, Tuesday 28th May, for a work session, in the presence of Alain Flausch, Secretary General of UITP (International Association of Public Transport). The members of the MMG are calling on national governments and the European Institutions for increased support for the urban public transport sector, which can play a key role against the ongoing European economic crisis. Grow with Public Transport International Awards: innovative solutions for more and better public transport
UITP has revealed the winners of the Grow with Public Transport International Awards at the Opening Ceremony of the 60th UITP World Congress & Exhibition in Geneva. More than 240 applications from over 40 countries were submitted for the 2013 edition. It targets policy makers worldwide and aims to raise their awareness of the urgent need for more and better public transport, highlighting the benefits of sustainable mobility. More and better public transport will help boost green and inclusive growth, enhance competitiveness, and create green jobs. It will also play a major role in protecting the environment and creating liveable cities. Now is the time for policy-makers to take action by establishing a supportive policy framework for urban mobility, developing sustainable transport modes and supporting investment in public transport. Public transport stakeholders are also taking action to help boost their own business.
