    Partnerships and cooperation

    Advocate for public transport

As the prime advocate and promoter of public transport, UITP works to mobilise political will. We are actively engaged with a number of key stakeholders including governments, mayors and international bodies - such as the United Nations (UNEP, UNDESA, UNFCCC), the World Bank and European institutions.

    Memorandum of Understanding

    UITP and UN-HABITAT
UITP will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) on 24 May 2007, on the occasion of UITP’s 57th World Congress and Exhibition in Helsinki.

UNHABITAT is the UN agency responsible for urban settlements, based in Nairobi. It is active in all regions of the developing world.

It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The main documents outlining the mandate of the organization are the Vancouver Declaration on Human Settlements, Habitat Agenda, Istanbul Declaration on Human Settlements, the Declaration on Cities and Other Human Settlements in the New Millennium, and Resolution 56/206

    UITP and UNEP

UITP signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in June 2005.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the voice for the environment in the United Nations system. It is an advocate, educator, catalyst and facilitator, promoting the wise use of the planet's natural assets for sustainable development. UNEP's mission is "to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations."

Together with UNEP, UITP has produced a series of fact sheets on "Transport, health and environment – boosting quality of life for children and youth".
This documentation is available in English and in Russian.

June 2009: UITP’s 58th World Congress supports self-development projects for Ethiopia
UITP Charitable giving for Menschen für Menschen

In Vienna UITP World Congress is again supporting an international charity. After Save the Children (2001, 2007), Aldeas Infantiles (2003), UNICEF (2005), Menschen für Menschenwill be the beneficiary of UITP’s charitable support for the 2009 World Congress (€5 per delegate).

Menschen für Menschen runs a wide range of long-term projects in eleven regions of Ethiopia. These include agricultural and agro-ecological projects, the construction of wells, girls’ homes and schools, the improvement of the medical care system and organisation of training programmes. These together with educational programmes for the betterment of women in society are becoming increasingly intensive. 700 workers (including six Europeans) are supervising the work of more than 3 million people.
